Like the Latin word from which their title is derived, mediums are "in the middle." With a foot in two worlds, they communicate both with the living and with spirits such as ghosts, guides, angels, gods, goddesses, and other discorporate entities. By hearing their voices, seeing their forms, or acting almost like loudspeakers, psychic mediums are able to pass supernatural messages back and forth between this world and the other.

For their part, the departed seem to want the living to know that things are fine and that they needn't be afraid for them or themselves. Mediums will tell you, however, that they are not completely accurate and that their information should be questioned. The process of receiving information and then trying to transmit it is somewhat akin to translation, with the possibility that something might get lost, to carry the analogy further. In addition, spirits who are consulted may not particularly be all-knowing or even well intentioned. The medium simply passes the information along as best they can.

Channeling is a more modern way of referring to the ability of psychics to take messages from the other world. Psychics are said to channel for a certain entity or divine source. Although psychic mediums can be completely in control of themselves as they communicate with the disembodied spirits around them, the sub-group of channelers is more likely to enter a meditative or trancelike state. The spiritual being is then able to enter the channelers body.

In either type of mediumship, the critical factor of interest is the medium's ability to communicate with that other world and thus provide the possibility that departed loved ones can be accessed. Most often, people who seek the talents of a medium are interested in knowing that their loved ones still exist and that they are doing well.

Although the channeling experience can be done in groups or individually and the medium may be completely in trance and unaware or completely conscious and in control, there is no difference in the quality of the experience. Different mediums simply work in different ways.
