Hawayo Takata introduced Reiki to the West in the 1930s and "revised" the history of Reiki, making it more acceptable to Americans. Her revisions transformed Mikao Usui from a Tendai Buddhist to a Christian theologian and fabricated a story about him travelling the world to discover the healing powers of Jesus.

Actually, Usui's Reiki comes from the oriental traditions of his time, drawing on martial arts and energy cultivation techniques. Reiki combines the ancient tradition of Palm Healing ( Teate ) with a system of attunements from Tendai Buddhism to control the energies of Shintoism, the indigenous religion of Japan.

Originally, Usui's Reiki was a path to enlightenment and its healing abilities were secondary. The Reiki of today comes from one of Mikao Usui's students, a retired surgeon named Dr. Hayashi who was more interested in healing than he was in seeking enlightenment. Dr. Hayashi taught his modern Reiki techniques to Mrs. Takata, who brought Reiki to America. Hawayo Takata initiated twenty-two Reiki who, in turn, spread the healing art of Reiki across America.

The experience of receiving Reiki varies from one person to the next. However, there are three sensations that are widely reported among Reiki recipients. These include a feeling of relaxation, a feeling of heat emanating from the practitioner's hands, and seeing colors. The most commonly reported colors are blue, lilac, violet, and purple.

Not everyone experiences these things and other sensations or experiences may also occur. Furthermore, none of these sensations are required for Reiki to be effective. Each session is unique and just because you felt heat during one session, but not during another session doesn't mean healing did not occur.
